Thank You for visiting us at the ASLA Conference & Expo

We enjoyed meeting with Landscape Architects, Project Planners and Managers from across the country at this year's annual ASLA conference. Hearing that there is such a tremendous need for high-quality interpretive signage in all regions of the country will drive the development of our Ready-to-Order and Customizable Interpretive Trail Sign series over the next year. From food deserts to sandy deserts, and green roofs to green infrastructure, we have a much better idea of new content to fit your needs.

We welcome your feedback on additional topics, sign formats and added interactivity to our series. If you have a specific sign topic, and you don't see it in our Read-to-Order series, don't worry, we'll be glad to develop and design a sign to match your exact needs. We do custom projects as well, so if you would like a signage program that is unique to your site, just let us know. You can see some of our other custom projects in our on-line portfolio.

Pulse Design Nature Series trade show exhibit design features outdoor interpretive nature trail signs, motion graphics screen presentation, interactive ipad tablet presentation, new website, print and pdf catalog of interpretive graphic panels, large format graphic backdrop, 4 interpretive sign mounting base options, 50 high pressure laminate sign samples, and small take away sign samples made from laminate.

ASLA Conference and Expo Nov. 6-9th

Fall is such a dramatic season of change on the midwest landscape, but with change comes immeasurable beauty. This year it also brings landscape architects to Chicago from all across the country, as they celebrate the advancement of their profession in their annual conference and expo being held at McCormick Place from Nov. 6th through 9th.

We hope many of you will stop by booth 1555 on the trade show floor and take an up-close view of our Ready-to-Order and Customizable Interpretive Trail Signs. We have some exciting samples that we're giving away, and we'll be glad to answer any questions you may have about ordering from our catalog or customizing our signs to fit your site specific needs.

During the conference, we hope you'll take time to explore the city of Chicago and it's surrounding communities. They offer great diversity and opportunity for green spaces, roof-top gardens, green infrastructure projects and recreation. We proudly welcome the conference attendees to our home town, and hope you enjoy your stay in this magnificent city.

Veterans' Memorial Trail Now Open!

"Wayfinding signs blend art and information along Forest Preserve trail" reads the headline on the Will County Forest Preserve's district newsletter. "Three steel leaf sculptures sprouted this spring (along Veterans' Memorial Trail)…They were meant to be icons visible in the landscape…reflecting the merging of something organic with something man-made" Ralph Schultz, district director said.

The 17.5-foot tall signs are stunningly dramatic set against the wooded landscape as well as the toll road for which the trail is named. Each leaf in the series of trail markers is a different color, indicating a new trail junction. The signs also feature a custom map, which indicates their location on the trail, and helps trail users to navigate between the interconnected trails that now wind between Will, Cook, DuPage Grundy and LaSalle counties.

Accessible interpretive signs installed at Little Red Schoolhouse

In 2013, the Forest Preserve of Cook County was well underway with renovating their holdings in advance of their 100-year anniversary. A beloved site, the Little Red Schoolhouse, had opened a new nature center building within the past decade, but was missing accessible outdoor trails and signage. The site has a high number of visitors that come in family and school groups, and is a favorite stop for groups with developmental learning challenges. In order to address many of these concerns, Pulse Design was hired to provide a new approach to signage that would be accessible to all visitors regardless of learning and language barriers.

Working in conjunction with Hitchcock Design Group, who designed enabling gardens and handicapped accessible paved pathways, Pulse Design developed interpretive content that connected visitors to the gardens, restored prairie and lake, using their senses. A series of three-sided kiosks were designed with custom laser-cut icons. Each sign feautes three brightly colored, photographic panels, which provide fun nature facts and species identification.

A series of 13 smaller signs were created to tackle the accessible barriers that the facility faced. Each sign featured a flashcard-type design with a large tactile raised photo, large raised tactile type, braille, and language translations for spanish and polish. A custom sign language illustration was also provided to help non-verbal learners as well as the deaf use the signs as learning opportunities. "It was great to see everyone from the smallest children through teenagers, running from sign to sign, touching the graphics and trying the sign language movements" Mary Chiz from Pulse Design observed. "The signs have been really well received by our visitors" Julie Vandervort, manager of LRSH added, "they love them and the new gardens."
